World History
This course covers the development of world civilization, from prehistory
to the present. In addition to surveying world history, students will
explore answers to the question, "Why study history?" in an attempt to
establish the relevancy of history for application in life and career.
The question, "How does a historian establish the reliability of a historical
account?" will also be examined with a view to applying the critical
thinking method to dilemmas in life. In answering that question, we will
look at the New Testament as the foremost example of an ancient text
with sterling credentials. We consider the use of archaeological findings,
evidence from within a text, evidence from outside sources, and
attestation from manuscripts, to establish the credibility of a historical
account.
Finally, we will also cover practical "lessons in history" which may be
applied in exercising one's citizenship (understanding the news, voting,
etc.), and in various professional fields.
New for 2007-2008: Video lectures and online discussions covering
critical thinking questions and lessons in history (practical application)
