CONSULTING SERVICES

Most history courses are comprised of two elements:

1.  The survey of history (names, dates, developments, and insights of the
authors) which is taught in the adopted textbook or curriculum, and

2.  The insights, experiences, lessons, exercises and illustrations from the
classroom instructor.

Most history instructors have had their own meaningful experiences with history,
including practical fieldwork as a historian.  This is true of me as well.

For those parents who have already selected a world or U.S. history curriculum or
textbook for the year, I would like to offer another option :  my tutoring services
using the textbook or curriculum that you have selected.

I can offer some lessons that have proven to make history come alive for students.
These lessons could make the difference between developing a life-long
appreciation for history or thinking of history as boring and inapplicable to life.
Learning to enjoy history could aid in acquiring critical thinking skills,
understanding of other cultures, and understanding about how current events
developed out of past events.  This should help the student prepare for
participation in our democracy (understanding the news, voting, etc.).

Lessons include:

Critical thinking questions:  Why study history?  How does a historian prove
whether a source is reliable?  What lessons can we learn from history?  (Included
with this material is my lesson covering different ways historians determine the
reliability of a source.  I use the New Testament as an example of an ancient source
with sterling credentials.  I also include a lesson on how the skills and knowledge
learned while studying history can be applied in life and career.)

Exercises to make history come alive--exercises which transport the student to a
different time and place, and give them experience doing the work of a historian
(History Comes Alive 1, 2 & 3).

I can use your selected textbook or curriculum as a foundation for a history course,
along with my lessons, while doing the actual teaching , evaluating, and grading of
the course.

To assess or evaluate the student's learning of the survey material (from the
textbook or curriculum), I offer two options:

1.  We can utilize a test, keyed to your selected textbook or curriculum, which you
create or which was provided by the textbook or curriculum publisher

2.  I can create an end-of-course assessment (map, timeline and summary notes),
based on the textbook or curriculum you have selected (this is the portfolio
approach for evaluating learning).  I would provide a list of key developments
(e.g. the Renaissance, the Reformation, etc.) in history which any textbook should
address.  The student would write a short note summarizing the significant
information for each development, show on a map where the development took
place, and show on a timeline when the development took place.  This is a good
tool for gaining understanding about cause and effect between events, and for
memorizing the names and dates of history.
